What is a School Based Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)?

SLPs in a school setting work with children who have communication problems that affect success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy and learning.  SLPs work with children who have a variety of disabilities including language, voice, stuttering, articulation and swallowing disorders.   They help children improve their comprehension of language and work with the educational team to develop classroom environments that are supportive of communication needs.  SLPs not only focus on spoken communication, but also alternative means of communication such as picture exchange, sign language and speech-output devices.
